Choosing a Daily Wellness Supplement

Six checks you can run on any supplement label in a couple of minutes.

Choosing a Daily Wellness Supplement — a SodaTide guide

Check One: Does Every Ingredient Have a Number?

Turn the bottle over and read the Supplement Facts panel. Every component should carry its own milligram figure.

If several sit under an invented blend name with one combined total, you cannot assess the product. A blend can be mostly the cheapest ingredient and the label reads identically either way.

To its credit, SodaTide prints a figure for all three components.

Check Two: For Probiotics, Are Strains Named?

Probiotic effects are largely strain-specific. "Probiotic blend" on its own tells you almost nothing; named organisms let you look up what has actually been studied.

Check Three: For Probiotics, Is There a CFU Count?

Colony forming units is the standard measure of live organisms. It is the single most useful number on a probiotic label, and a great many products including this one do not publish it.

When it is missing, no honest comparison against research amounts is possible. That is worth knowing rather than glossing over.

Check Four: Read the Other Ingredients Line

It sits under the panel in smaller type and it is where the useful details live — capsule material, fillers and allergens.

Hypromellose means a plant-derived capsule; gelatin means animal-derived. This matters for vegetarians, vegans and anyone with halal or kosher requirements.

Check Five: What Does the Front Panel Claim?

"Supports" and "helps maintain" are appropriate for a supplement. Anything claiming to treat, cure or prevent a condition has crossed a line no supplement may cross.

And "FDA approved" is not a real status for a supplement — no such process exists. A product can be made in an FDA registered facility, which describes premises. A brand getting this wrong tells you how carefully everything else was written.

Check Six: Are the Reviews Checkable?

Named testimonials with stock photographs and five-star ratings are the least informative content on any supplement page. Right-click a photo, check the filename, run a reverse image search. It takes seconds.

Our reviews page explains why we publish summaries rather than invented names.

The two-minute version

  • Every ingredient has its own number
  • Probiotic strains are named individually
  • A CFU count is published — or you know it is not
  • You have read the other ingredients line
  • No disease claims and no "FDA approved"
  • Testimonials survive a filename check
These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. SodaTide is a dietary supplement for healthy adults aged 18 and over and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. It is not a treatment for any digestive disorder or medical condition. Individual results may vary. Not for use by anyone under 18 or by pregnant or nursing women. Mild, temporary digestive adjustment can occur when starting any probiotic. If you have a compromised immune system, a serious digestive condition, or take medication, speak to your doctor before use.
